WHEN TO START HOSTING PARTIES
4 is probably the best age, in terms of your child really being able to appreciate more elaborate parties, decorations and activities. That’s not to say you shouldn’t throw one earlier!
Little bubbas generally won’t be very interested in anything too extravagant, but it is still a great time for all your family and friends to get together and celebrate such a special birthday. Work around naps and feeding times and try not to give your little one too much attention or they’re likely to get completely overwhelmed.
Simplicity is best for 2-3 year olds. Having an experienced entertainer to play lots of dancing and movement games is a great idea and will keep the children busy and amused. Anything too complicated and the children will lose interest

Both children and parents have such hectic social calendars these days that it pays to send out invitations and book the entertainment early. Be sure to do your research and find out what other events are on that might clash with your dates, just to be on the safe side.
Make life easy for yourself and don’t overdo the length or the size of the party. Around 2-3 hours is generally enough time, depending on the age of your partygoers. Although it’s tempting to invite absolutely everyone to your child’s party, less is less stress.
Parties don’t always have to be at home! If you’re stressing about how you’re going to fit all those kids into your house or worried about the chaos, Scout Halls, Community Centres and Parks are great cheap alternatives.
Try as we can’t always predict the weather. Even if it’s forecasted for beautiful sunny skies, rain can still come out of nowhere and throw you in the lurch. Have a wet weather plan, an alternative venue if necessary and avoid the stress!
SENDING OUT THE INVITES!
If you’re not inviting the whole class, talk to your child and teach them not to talk about their upcoming party at school. Fingers crossed, they won’t and you can avoid hurting any feelings.
If you’re throwing a party, be clear on the invitation who is invited. If you’re happy for parents and siblings to attend, say so if not; it’s never rude to say so.

People will always be late, whatever the reason. It’s a great idea to organise your entertainment 15 – 30 minutes after the official start time of your party to allow as many people to arrive as possible.
FOOD! GLORIOUS FOOD!
If you’re making your own cake, it’s probably best to make it the day before the party. This way if anything goes wrong, you have plenty of time to redo it before the party. If you’re getting a cake specially made, it’s always a good idea to call the day before and make sure they haven’t forgotten your order!

It’s best to double-check with parents to be aware of any food allergies. Often parents will pack allergy free food for their child to bring to the party, but it is always nice to offer a gluten-free and nut free option
Save money and let your child get creative by buying brown paper bags and letting your child decorate them. Finish them off by tying them up with some coloured string or ribbon.
It’s best to feed the children before or after your party entertainer performs, rather than during the performance. This ensures the entire time can be devoted to the performance and party activities. However, it always helps to have a few snacks and drinks to keep everyone fuelled throughout the party.
It’s always a nice idea to have some healthy alternatives, as well as the usual party treats, such as fruit and sandwiches. This is a great way to fill up little bellies and avoid sugar meltdowns, and parents will be grateful for it too.

ON THE DAY – BE PREPARED!
Avoid confusion and tie a bunch of balloons or put party decorations at the entrance of your venue, house or somewhere near your venue to make sure it is easy for everyone to find the party!
Set aside a decorated table or a designated area for presents. This way, nothing will go astray or get broken and you will know who brought what.
As the guests arrive to your child’s party, direct them to a game or activity to break the ice and keep them busy. Kids have a short attention span and so much energy, especially on a stomach full of party food, so don’t leave them to their own devices. Make sure they have structure throughout the day to prevent them from getting bored or getting out of hand. There is absolutely nothing better than watching your child’s face light up with joy at the surprise entry of a certain princess or superhero. Entertainers work off the energy levels of the kids around them and nothing gets a kid’s heart racing more than a surprise. Try to keep the exact details a mystery for your child. Perhaps tell them they will have a special visitor, but not tell them exactly who. This keeps everyone on his or her toes until the moment the entertainer arrives with typical fanfare

Quite often, your party performance will end with the cutting of the cake, so make sure you have it ready to go, matches on hand and a camera ready to capture the moment.
If you have lolly bags, let your child hand them out to their guests as they leave, as this is a great opportunity for them to thank everyone for coming.
AFTER THE BIG EVENT!
We would highly recommend opening the presents after the entertainment and most of the guests have left. This avoids distraction from the entertainment and party, as well as minimising the chance of things getting lost or broken, especially if you’re at a venue other than your home.
Thank you notes are a great way to thank your guests for presents and for helping make your child’s party special. It’s also a great way to teach your children about the importance of being grateful and thankful.
For a special addition to a thank you note, include a photo of the birthday child and the relevant child.
