The mad hatter is called “The Hatter” in the book Alice in Wonderland but earned the “mad” due to his eccentricities, such as taking bites out of teacups and going about with the price tag on his hat. Why might he be mad? Back in the day, the chemicals used in hat-making really did make hatters go a bit loopy, and that’s where the phrase “mad as a hatter” came from!
